HERTFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL

Hatfield College of Technology

(A Regional College)

Appointment of PRINCIPAL

This post will become vacant because Dr. W. A. J. Chapman is due to retire at the end of April, 1966.

The College was first planned in 1946, and building started two years later, on a site of 90 acres which is held in trust by the County Council. The College was opened for teaching in September, 1952, and formally opened by the Duke of Edinburgh the following December. A new -Science wing has since been added and there have been a number of other extensions and adaptations over the years. A schedule of accommodation for a further large major extension is being revised at the present time. This project was, in fact, included in the County's list of proposals for the 1964/65 Building Programme, but withdrawn because of the discussions then proceeding to associate the College with a new university in the County. The Government has, however, since decided not to go ahead with this development.

Candidates must be well qualified and experienced and should have held a post of considerable responsibility in a major institution of Higher Education. It will be an advantage if the applicant has also held a senior post in industry, public administration or research. The next five to ten years will be a vital period in the College's development and the Governing Body will attach a great deal of importance to personal qualities as well as to the required knowledge and experience.

The salary scale for the post will not be known until the current review has been completed, but it will be at least £3,250 - £3,500 per annum. The initial placing on the scale will depend on previous experience and other relevant factors. A car allowance is also paid, and there is a scheme of assistance towards removal expenses, etc.

Applications (no forms) including details of age, qualifications, experience, etc. and accompanied by the names and addresses of three referees, must roach the County Education Officer (Ref. B/H/D), County Hall, Hertford, Herts. not later than the 1st October, 1965.
