6 Manland Way, Harpenden, Herts. 23rd November, 1963. E. R. L. Lewis, Esq., Controller of Education, The English Electric Co., Ltd., English Electric House, Strand, London, W.C.2. Dear Mr. Lewis, I have given much thought to your offer of the University Liaison Officer post and, with great regret, I must decline it. Mr. Burnett has cleared away some of the difficulties which led to my seeking another post and will be appointing me to a new position with increased responsibility and authority and, in view of this, I would like to stay at Marconi Instruments. I may say, I decline the U.L.O. post with some misgivings - there are many features of it which I would very much have enjoyed and many basic difficulties yet to be overcome at M.I. All the same, I think it would be best if I build on what I have already started there. I am sorry about the delay and inconvenience caused in the appointment of a U.L.O. in time for the University tour. Ray Burnett is just off to Italy but on his return, I will discuss with him the possibility of my helping out as was suggested earlier. Once again, my apologies, and also my thanks for the offer. Yours sincerely, H.V. Beck
