What kinds of surveillance was I under?

Obviously there had been intervention in my confidential application to Racal and indeed I had long felt that news of the applications was getting back to Ray Burnett and I wondered if this could be because he was the designated Security Officer of M.I. and some of my work was classified.

However, there was also an agreement among employers in the electronics industry that when recruiting engineers from other companies only similar posts could be offered without notifying in advance that a formal offer was being made.  I myself had been required to operate within the terms of that agreement when recruiting for M.I. but had found a way round it by making an informal offer in the first instance.  It was possible that in accordance with the agreement some employers were automatically informing other companies immediately when applications for jobs had been made.

A third possibility was that being rather well known in the electronics industry there would be a discreet enquiry of M.I. about why I was seeking a job elsewhere.  It could also be that a request had gone to other companies that they be informed of any application by me.

A final possibility is that for Industry rather than Security considerations I was as a matter of Company policy under continual surveillance, with Ray Burnett and others in receipt of information about my activities.  This was consistent with what Ray Burnett had indicated to me on several occasions.
