NOTES

My main concerns in writing this section of my autobiography have been to explain what happened during my employment at Marconi Instruments, St. Albans, and to counter disinformation about my departure from the Company and my  subsequent career.  Another aim has been to provide material which may lead to an explanation of how in 1970 I came to be invited to Moscow as a Visiting Professor - was it for example due to my professional activities or part of the disinformation campaign or something completely different?

The account of my life while I was at M.I. is derived from diaries, documents, publications, correspondence and photos as well as notes made at the time and later.  Many of the papers are from my office files; the fact that I was permitted to take them with me when I left M.I. is in itself an indication of the extraordinary and perhaps unique manner of my departure.  See also:-

Narrative and descriptive material has been added to the information in the diaries and documents to facilitate reading and provide background. Most technical notes and family entries in the source diaries have been omitted.  Generally, the titles of persons and jobs are those at the time being described.

Most of the material on the main pages is directly related to my job at Marconi Instruments, with more detailed information given in linked notes. Reference is also made to people whose full significance may be discovered later - e.g. some of the individuals I encountered who were associated with the security and intelligence services but were not named in Spycatcher.  Links are also provided to material on professional activities, domestic developments and personal interests.

Some of the material is presented in diary form. Other parts summarise activities over several days, weeks or months so that developments can be better conveyed.
